Vanessa's House

When I took photos for reference to paint this house portrait, it was early spring, and the flowers had not come up yet.  But with the help of the gardener's suggestions and photos that were taken in previous years, I was able to piece together the vision of the gardens.

Vanessa's friends commissioned her house portrait as a surprise for her birthday. Her friends told me that Vanessa loves her English gardens and colorful flowers around her home, so I knew they had to be a focal point.

As our homes are our place to rest, rejuvenate and to do the kind of work that is meaningful to us, it is an honor to paint these important and treasured structures as a way to capture their essence.

A Mountain Retreat House Portrait

A Mountain Retreat Home

The owner of this lovely log home commissioned me to paint a house portrait as a gift for her husband for their 40th wedding anniversary.
Their home was a delight to paint for me.  I took several reference photos and made some adjustments to the landscape to accomodate the owners vision of her garden.  The original piece is painted in vivid goauche colors which are rich in vibrancy and hue.

Pen and Ink House Portrait

"Emaho"

"Emaho" (Emaho is kind of a Dzogchen exclamation. It means wonderful, far out, amazing, yes! Emaho!) is the name we have given to our dream home that we designed and built on our 7 acre wooded lot in Shohola in 2008.

In the foreground you can also see the labrynth that we built using the natural blue stone from the property.

We love living here and enjoy the critters, the quiet of the country and the sound of David's ceramic bells as their soft tones dance with the breeze.

Since I do pen and ink house portraits commissioned by others, I didn't want to be like the cobbler whose children have no shoes.  This 8"x10" drawing is now matted and framed on our wall, as a symbol of the love of our home.

Milford Home

House portrait

When I took the photos for this portrait the snow was on the ground.  But with the help of some reference photos taken during the spring and summer, I was able to adjust and add to the landscape.

This is a lovely home with lots of historical charm, one of Milford's best.

The medium I used is gouache, an opaque watercolor that is saturated with color, one of my favorite mediums.

Now if we could have our wish, a warm and sunny spring would be here now to replace all the rain and fog that seems to be dominating our region.

Original Watercolor House Portrait

Original Watercolor House Portrait

Home on the Delaware River

Whenever I have the privilege of painting a watercolor house portrait for a customer, it gives me pleasure to be able to portray a beloved home for the residents who cherish it.
This lovely home sits on a bluff overlooking the Delaware River, and is as charming inside as it is outside.  The rustic hot tub is a focal point of this landscape.
I work from photographs, and welcome inquiries about having your home or business reproduced as an original watercolor.

Pen and ink house portraits

Silver Lake detail

This is a detail of a large pen and ink landscape (that measures 40" x 28").  The landscape included over 25 homes and boat houses, as well as a large lake (Silver Lake) and landscapes with white birches, oaks, evergreen trees, blueberry bushes, ferns and more.  What makes this piece so special to me is the ink and the pen, the tools that  became a source of expressing what my words cannot say about texture, light, and quality of lines.  It became a saga of describing a time now long past, that was a slower pace and of simpler expectations.  The idea for this landscape was the conception of the lady who resides in "Escarpada", a home that was built by her husband's family in the 1800's.  Although the project was several months in the making, and now that it is completed I am ready to move on, it is not without some sense of sentiment about saying goodbye and hoping to revisit this style and technique in future projects.
